Defender Mountain is a tall peak located right on the border between the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. It stands proudly on the Continental Divide, which is like a giant ridge that separates rivers flowing to different oceans. This impressive mountain is a part of the beautiful Canadian Rockies.
The Story Behind Defender Mountain's Name
Defender Mountain got its name in 1916. It was named by a group called the Interprovincial Boundary Survey. They chose the name after a British Royal Navy ship called HMS Defender (1911). This ship was famous for its role in a big naval battle during World War I called the Battle of Jutland.
The mountain's name was officially adopted as Mount Defender in 1924 by the Geographical Names Board of Canada. Later, in 1966, its name was officially changed to Defender Mountain, which is what we call it today.
