Deià is a small village and a municipality located on the coast of Mallorca, a Spanish island. It sits in the Serra de Tramuntana, which is a mountain range in the northern part of the island. Deià is about 16 kilometers (10 miles) north of Valldemossa. It is famous for the many writers and musicians who have lived there.
This village is known for its amazing views. It has orange and olive groves growing on steep cliffs. These cliffs look out over the clear blue Mediterranean Sea. This beautiful scenery attracted many artists and writers from different countries after the First World War.
Deià: A Home for Artists
Deià has a long history of attracting creative people. Its quiet beauty and inspiring landscape have made it a special place for many artists.
Famous Writers in Deià
One of the first well-known foreigners to live in Deià was the English poet and writer, Robert Graves. He worked with another writer, Laura Riding, to start a publishing company called the Seizin Press. Robert Graves returned to Deià after a war and lived there until he passed away.
He used Deià as the setting for many of his stories. One of his famous books is Hercules my Shipmate. Today, you can visit his old house, which is now a museum.
Other famous writers also visited or lived in Deià. Anaïs Nin, a writer, came to the village in the 1920s. She even wrote a short story that took place on Deià's beach. A Spanish writer named Carme Riera later wrote a story about Anaïs Nin's visit.
The village is also the setting for a book called The Ship of Fools (La nave de los locos). This book was written by Cristina Peri Rossi from Uruguay. Claribel Alegría, a poet and writer from Nicaragua, also lived in Deià.
Music and Rock Stars in Deià
In more recent years, Deià has become popular with music stars. Richard Branson, who started Virgin Records, owns a fancy home in the village. Many musicians from his record label have visited Deià. Sometimes, they even play music together at a local bar called Sa Fonda.
Deià has been home to several musicians from the "Canterbury scene," a type of music. These include Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, and Daevid Allen. Famous musicians like Mick Jagger, Mark Knopfler (a guitarist), and Mike Oldfield often played music there in the late 1980s. Caroline Corr also played there. Part of Fionn Regan's album, 100 Acres of Sycamore, was inspired by his time spent in Deià.
