Discover Delta Meadows River Park

Delta Meadows River Park (DMRP) is a unique state park in California, USA. It helps protect a wild part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. This park is officially closed to the public right now. It does not have visitor services like restrooms or picnic areas.

The park covers sloughs (which are like small, slow rivers), wet meadows, and an island. It sits between the Sacramento River and the Mokelumne River. You can find it near the historic town of Locke. It is about 28 miles (45 km) from both Sacramento and Stockton. This 472-acre (191 ha) park was created in 1985.

A Look Back in Time

Delta Meadows helps us see what the river delta was like many years ago. Imagine it 150 years ago! It was full of tall trees like oak, walnut, willow, and cottonwood. There were also many tule plants, which are tall reeds.

Amazing Animals and Plants

This park is home to lots of wildlife. You might spot black-tailed deer walking through the trees. In the water, there are beavers, river otters, and muskrats.

Many different birds also live here. Look for great blue herons standing tall in the water. You might also see colorful wood ducks, mallards, and quick belted kingfishers. Cormorants are also common, diving for fish.

How to Visit Delta Meadows

Delta Meadows is mostly reached by boat. However, you can drive onto Railroad Slough Levee. This is from the River Road between Walnut Grove and Locke. Look for a small gravel road just north-east of the cross channel.

In the past, a group called the Delta Natural History Association offered canoe tours. These tours had guides who would show visitors around. They were usually held in the spring and fall. You could reserve a spot through Brannan Island State Recreation Area.
