Buffalo and Military Base
In the 1920s, many American Bison (large, shaggy animals) were brought to the area. Because of this, the community's name was changed to Buffalo Center in 1927.
During World War II, in 1942, a military base called Fort Greely was built just five miles south of Deltana. This base brought more people and jobs to the area.
Growth and the Pipeline
In the 1950s, beef cattle were shipped from Deltana. Later, in the 1970s, the local economy got another boost. This was when the trans-Alaska pipeline was completed. This huge pipeline carries oil across Alaska.
To help manage the growing bison population, about 70,000 acres (283 square kilometers) of land were set aside in 1980. This area was named the Delta Bison Range. It helped keep the bison separate from local farms.
