Demarcus Dobbs: A Football Journey
Early Life and High School Years
Demarcus Dobbs was born on November 30, 1987, in Savannah, Georgia. When he was seven, he and his brother Daniel moved to the Bethesda Home for Boys. Demarcus was a great student. He was invited to play football at Calvary Baptist Day School by Danny Britt, who was the athletic director.
Demarcus had never played football before high school. Calvary Baptist Day School wanted to give him a good education. Danny Britt asked him if he wanted to try football. During his time at Calvary Baptist, Demarcus stayed close with the Britt family. In his senior year, he moved in with them. The Britts had two young daughters, and Demarcus formed a special bond with them. He said it was funny to see how big he was next to the small girls.
At Calvary Baptist, Demarcus played both tight end and defensive end. In his senior year, he caught 14 passes for 259 yards and scored four touchdowns as a tight end. He was named to the All-Coastal Empire team for this. On defense, he made 78 tackles and six sacks. He was also named to the All-Region first-team as a defensive end. Besides football, Demarcus played high school basketball. In 2005, he was named to the Savannah Morning News All-City First-team.
After high school, Demarcus was a highly rated football recruit. He received scholarship offers from several universities. He chose to play for the Georgia Bulldogs football team. Demarcus still supports his old school. In 2012, he attended an alumni football game there and even did the coin toss.
College Football Journey
Demarcus started his college career at the University of Georgia in 2006. He was "redshirted" that year, which meant he could practice with the team but not play in games. This gave him an extra year to play college football later.
In 2007, Demarcus played in all 13 games for Georgia. He made his first college tackle against Hawaii in the 2008 Sugar Bowl. He mostly played on special teams.
In 2008, Demarcus became a starter. He had his first career start against Central Michigan. In that game, he made four tackles and had an interception. He returned the interception 78 yards for a touchdown! Against Arizona State, he got his first college sack and forced a fumble. He finished the season with 19 tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions.
The next year, 2009, he started in all 13 games for the Bulldogs. He made a career-high 39 tackles and 4.5 sacks. In his senior year in 2010, he started in 10 of 13 games and made 28 tackles.
Demarcus Dobbs earned the Joseph E. Espy football scholarship three times during his five years at Georgia. He graduated in December 2010 with a degree in consumer economics.
Playing in the NFL
After the 2011 NFL draft, Demarcus Dobbs was not chosen by any team. However, he was signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent. This means a team signs a player who wasn't drafted. He impressed the coaches during training camp and made the 49ers' final team roster. He was one of only two undrafted players to stay with the team that year.
During the 2012 preseason, Demarcus started playing tight end in addition to his main position on the defensive line. He played for the 49ers until November 4, 2014, when he was waived.
After leaving the 49ers, Demarcus signed with the Seattle Seahawks. He re-signed with the Seahawks on March 29, 2015.
