Demarest is a small town, called a borough, in Bergen County, New Jersey. It's located in the northeastern part of New Jersey, close to New York City. In 2020, about 4,981 people lived there.

Demarest became a borough on April 8, 1903. It was created from parts of two other townships. The town was named after the Demarest family and the local train station. The train station itself was named after Ralph S. Demarest, who was important in building the railroad and served in the New Jersey government.

Demarest is a diverse community. In 2020, about 66% of residents were white, and about 31% were Asian. Many people of Korean American heritage live in Demarest, making up about 20% of the population.

Demarest has its own public school system for younger students. It serves kids from pre-kindergarten up to eighth grade.

Demarest Public Schools

The Demarest Public Schools district has three schools:

  • County Road School: For students in pre-kindergarten through first grade.
  • Luther Lee Emerson Schools: For students in grades 2 through 4.
  • Demarest Middle School: For students in grades 5 through 8.

High School Education

Students in grades nine through twelve attend Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest. This high school also welcomes students from nearby Closter and Haworth. It's part of a larger school district that includes another high school in Old Tappan. Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest even won a special award, the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence, in the mid-1990s.

Other School Options

Students in Bergen County, including Demarest, can also apply to special technical high school programs. These are offered by the Bergen County Technical Schools. They have campuses in Hackensack, Teterboro, and Paramus. These schools offer unique programs for students interested in specific careers.

There is also a private school in Demarest called the Academy of the Holy Angels. It's a middle and high school for girls, serving grades six through twelve.

Two main county roads, County Route 501 and County Route 505, pass through Demarest. Even though Demarest is a small town, traffic can get busy, especially around 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. This is when students are going to and from the schools. Sometimes, police officers help direct traffic at busy intersections like County Road and Hardenburgh Avenue.

Public Buses

You can catch a bus in Demarest to travel to other places. Rockland Coaches offers bus routes that stop near the Duck Pond. These buses can take you to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, or to the Palisades Center in West Nyack, New York, which is a popular shopping mall.

Historic Train Station

Demarest used to have its own train station, the Demarest Railroad Depot. Passenger trains stopped running there in 1966. The borough bought the station in 1978 and restored it. Today, it's a historic site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
