History of Denmark, Oregon
Denmark was settled by families from the country of Denmark. These first-generation Danish settlers created a successful dairy farming business in the area.
Early Development and Growth
The community grew over time. A post office was opened in Denmark in 1882, helping people send and receive mail. By 1915, Denmark was a busy place. It had a sawmill for cutting wood, a cheese factory, and a creamery where butter and other dairy products were made. There was also a public school for the children in the community. In 1940, Denmark had a population of 96 people.
Decline and Modern Day
Over the years, the community of Denmark began to shrink. When U.S. Route 101 was improved, it was built to go around the main business area of Denmark. This meant fewer people stopped in the community, and businesses started to decline. The post office closed in 1960. By the 1990s, the only business left was a store that also sold gas. In 2009, an espresso stand, where you can get coffee drinks, was at the same location.
Climate Change Focus
In 2009, Denmark, Oregon, was featured in a series of articles by Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB). These articles talked about climate change. This series came out around the same time as the Copenhagen Summit, a big meeting about climate change held in the country of Denmark.
