Derek White's Racing Journey
Starting Out in Racing
Derek White spent 30 years racing special cars called drag cars in Canada. In 2009, he decided to try stock car racing instead. That year, he raced five times in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. His best finish was 11th in his very first race at Autodrome Saint-Eustache.
The next year, in 2010, he raced in 11 out of 13 events. He even finished in the top ten at the first race of the season at Delaware Speedway. Because of his great performance, he was named Rookie of the Year!
In 2014, Derek also competed in a race for the American Canadian Tour at Airborne Speedway.
Racing in National NASCAR Series
Derek White also raced in some of NASCAR's biggest series.
Truck Series Debut
In 2009, he made his first start in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. He raced for Mario Gosselin at Martinsville Speedway and finished 23rd.
Xfinity Series Races
In 2012, Derek raced in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (which is now called the Xfinity Series). He was a "road course ringer" for SR² Motorsports at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. This means he was especially good at racing on tracks with turns, not just ovals. He finished 18th in that race, which was his best finish ever in the series!
In 2014, Derek White helped create a new racing team called Motorsports Business Management, or MBM Motorsports. He worked with driver Carl Long to start the team. Derek raced for his own team in six races that year.
Sprint Cup Series Debut
On July 13, 2015, Derek White made his big debut in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. This is NASCAR's highest level of racing! He raced at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for Circle Sport. This was a special moment because he was the first Native American driver to try a Cup Series race. He finished 39th in that race.
About Derek White's Life
Derek White is from Kahnawake, Quebec, Canada. He is a member of the Mohawk community.
In March 2016, Derek White faced legal issues related to how tobacco was brought into Canada. Because of these issues, NASCAR temporarily suspended him from racing in April 2016.
However, in 2019, some of the charges against him were dropped. He was found responsible for not paying certain taxes on tobacco imported from the United States. He appealed this decision. On November 1, 2023, the court overturned his convictions. He and another person had argued that Mohawk people have special rights to trade tobacco without certain taxes, based on their Constitution Act Section 35 rights and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. They said that the Mohawk nation has the right to control its own economy, based on old treaty rights from 1664 to 1764. After this, NASCAR allowed him to race again in 2024.
