Playing Career Highlights
Early Hockey Days
When Deron was younger, he played in big hockey tournaments. These were called the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments. He played in them in 1989 and 1990. He was part of a youth team from Rye, New York.
Joining the NHL
The Winnipeg Jets picked Deron in the 1994 NHL draft. He was the 30th player chosen overall. In his first season, 1995–96, he made history. He scored two goals in just four seconds! This tied an NHL record that was set way back in 1931.
The next season, the Jets team moved and became the Phoenix Coyotes. Deron stayed with the Coyotes for a few years. Later, he was traded to the New Jersey Devils in 2000. He played only a few games for the Devils. Then, he was traded again to the new team, the Columbus Blue Jackets. He played two seasons there. He even led the Blue Jackets in how much time he spent on the ice each game.
Playing During the NHL Lockout
The 2004–05 NHL season was cancelled. This was because of something called an "NHL lockout." During this time, Deron played hockey in other countries. He played for a team in Italy called Bolzano HC. He also played for a team in Switzerland called Kloten.
Success in Germany
In 2005, Deron joined Eisbären Berlin in Germany. This team plays in Germany's top league, the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). He helped them win three league championships in four seasons!
At the end of the 2006–07 DEL season, he returned to the NHL. He played five games for the New York Islanders. He helped them reach the playoffs. But he soon went back to Eisbären Berlin for the 2007–08 season. That year, he was named the DEL Defenseman of the Year. He also helped the team win another championship.
Deron was a DEL All-Star defenseman for three seasons. He even set a team record. He played in 237 games in a row!
Time in Russia
After four years in Germany, Deron moved to Russia. He signed with HC Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk. This team plays in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). In 2010, he joined Traktor Chelyabinsk.
He set a record in the KHL for most goals scored by a defenseman in the 2010–11 season. He was also chosen for the KHL All-Star team in 2013.
In 2013, Deron signed with HC Spartak Moscow. But due to money problems with Spartak, he was traded to CSKA Moscow in 2014. Later that year, he decided to return to Traktor Chelyabinsk.
Deron played 416 games for Traktor Chelyabinsk. This is the most games played by any North American player for that team. He scored 189 points (75 goals and 114 assists). He was a KHL All-Star twice, in 2013 and 2014. He was also a top scorer among defensemen in 2011 and 2014. He won silver and bronze medals in the KHL in 2012 and 2013.
During the 2015–16 KHL season, Deron became the captain of Traktor. On February 16, 2016, he made history again. He became the oldest hockey player in Traktor Chelyabinsk's history to play in an official game. He was 39 years old at the time.
