High School Career
Derryck started his high school basketball journey at Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, Los Angeles. Later, he moved to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada. During his junior year, he was a star player. He averaged 17 points and 6.2 assists per game. He helped his team achieve an impressive 29 wins and only 3 losses. Derryck finished high school a year early by taking extra classes online and at a local junior college.
Joining College Teams
On April 21, 2015, Derryck decided to play college basketball for Duke University. He chose Duke over other big schools like Arizona and Kentucky. The famous Duke coach, Mike Krzyzewski, convinced him to join the 2015 class. This meant Derryck would finish high school early to fill a spot left by another player. Derryck was considered one of the top young point guards in the country.
College Career
At Duke, Derryck played as a freshman. He started 20 games and averaged 7.1 points and 2.5 assists per game. After his first year, Derryck decided to transfer to the USC Trojans. He chose USC over other teams like Kansas.
After transferring, Derryck had to sit out one season without playing. This is called a "redshirt" year. It allows players to practice with the team but not play in games. This way, they save a year of their college playing eligibility.
When he returned to play, Derryck averaged 3.8 points and 1.2 assists per game. In his third year of college basketball (his "redshirt junior" year), he started 27 games. He improved his stats to 7.7 points and 4.3 assists per game. After that season, Derryck transferred again as a graduate student. He committed to Boston College. In his final college season at Boston College, he averaged 12.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
