Derryck Thornton Jr. is an American professional basketball player. He was born on May 30, 1997. Derryck plays as a point guard for the Leicester Riders team in the British Basketball League. Before becoming a professional, he played college basketball for three different teams: the Duke Blue Devils, the USC Trojans, and the Boston College Eagles.

High School Basketball Journey
Derryck Thornton started his high school basketball career at Sierra Canyon School. After his first year, he moved to Findlay Prep in Nevada. During his junior year, he was a star player. He scored about 17 points and made 6.2 assists per game. His great play helped his team achieve an impressive 29 wins and only 3 losses. Derryck even finished high school a year early. He did this by taking extra classes online and at a local college.
Choosing a College Team
Many top colleges wanted Derryck to play for them. On April 21, 2015, he decided to join the Duke team. Other big schools like Arizona and Kentucky also wanted him. Duke's coach, Mike Krzyzewski, helped Derryck finish high school early. This allowed him to join Duke's team sooner. Derryck was considered one of the best young point guards in the country.
College Basketball Career
Derryck's first year at Duke was exciting. He started 20 games, even though he was a freshman. He averaged 7.1 points and 2.5 assists per game. After that season, Derryck decided to transfer to the USC team. He had to sit out one season before he could play for USC. This is called a "redshirt" year.
When he started playing for USC, he came off the bench at first. In his third year of college, he became a starter for 27 games. He averaged 7.7 points and 4.3 assists per game. After his time at USC, Derryck transferred again as a graduate student. He joined the Boston College team. In his final college season, he played very well. He averaged 12.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
Professional Basketball Career
After finishing college, Derryck Thornton began his professional basketball career. On August 27, 2020, he signed his first professional contract. He joined Borac Čačak, a team in the Basketball League of Serbia. He played there for a season, averaging 4.9 points and 1.5 assists per game.
Later, on December 17, 2021, Derryck signed with the Kapfenberg Bulls. This team plays in the Austrian Basketball Superliga. Since 2022, he has been playing for the Leicester Riders in the British Basketball League.
