The Desertores Islands are a group of islands in the Sea of Chiloé. They are located between Chiloé Island and the mainland of Chile. These islands are the easternmost part of the larger Chiloé Archipelago.
Even though they are part of the Chiloé Archipelago, the Desertores Islands are governed differently. They belong to the Chaitén commune in the Palena Province. Most of the other islands in the Chiloé Archipelago are part of the Chiloé Province.
Main Islands
There are six main islands in the Desertores group. These are Auten, Chuit, Chulin, Imerquiña, Nayahue, and Talcan. Talcan is the largest island and also the one furthest to the east. It is only about six kilometers (about 3.7 miles) from the mainland of Chile.
Smaller Islands
Besides the main islands, there are also several smaller islands. One interesting small island is Silla del Diablo. It lies about halfway between Chulin Island and the mainland.
