Dexter is a city located in Stoddard County, Missouri, United States. It was founded in 1873. In 2020, about 7,927 people lived there.

History of Dexter
Dexter was officially planned out in 1873. An early settler named Mr. Dex gave the town its name. He named it after his fast horse, Dexter.
The town grew quickly when the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway arrived. A post office called Dexter City opened in 1873. Its name was changed to just Dexter in 1887.
The Dexter Gymnasium is an important building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. This means it is a special place that should be protected.
On July 10, 2021, a strong tornado hit Dexter. It damaged at least 150 homes in the town.
Geography of Dexter
Dexter is about 19 miles (31 km) southwest of Sikeston. The city sits on a unique landform called Crowley's Ridge.
Dexter is also located where two important roads meet. These are U.S. Route 60 and Missouri Route 25.
The city covers a total area of about 6.65 square miles (17.22 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
