Diego Guzmán de Haros (born in 1566, died in 1631) was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He became a cardinal in 1629 and served until his death.

Biography

Diego Guzmán de Haros was born in Ocaña, Spain, in 1566. He went to the University of Salamanca, where he earned special degrees in theology (the study of religious faith) and law.

After he became a priest, he worked as a chaplain for the Discalced Franciscans in Madrid. In 1608, he became a royal chaplain for Philip III of Spain, who was the king at the time.

In August 1613, Diego Guzmán de Haros joined the Supreme Council of the Spanish Inquisition. This was a powerful group that made sure people followed Catholic rules in Spain. He also became a canon (a type of priest) in the main church of Cathedral of Toledo. The king also chose him to be a teacher, or preceptor, for his daughters, including the infanta Maria Anna of Spain.

On March 14, 1616, he was named Patriarch of the West Indies. This was a special title for a high-ranking church leader. A month later, on April 18, 1616, he became the Titular Archbishop of Tyre. Soon after, he was officially made a bishop. On June 30, 1620, Pope Paul V made him a special representative, called a Commissary Apostolic, for a religious order he had issued. Later, on September 15, 1625, he was appointed Archbishop of Seville, which is a very important role in the church.

Pope Urban VIII chose him to be a cardinal on November 19, 1629. This was done in pectore, which means "in the heart" or secretly, and was announced later on July 15, 1630.

In early 1631, he traveled to the Kingdom of Hungary. He went there to go with his former student, Maria Anna of Spain, to her wedding with Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor. On his way back home, he planned to go to Rome to get his special cardinal's hat, called a galero, from the Pope. However, he sadly died before he could do this. He passed away in Ancona, Italy, on January 21, 1631. He was first buried in a church there, and later his body was moved back to Madrid.
