Life of Diego de Roxas
Diego de Roxas was born in the city of Burgos, Spain, in the year 1500. When he arrived in the Americas, he quickly became known for taking on difficult and dangerous missions.
Early Explorations
One of his first tasks was exploring rivers near the border of Guatemala and Mexico. For these journeys, Roxas often traveled with local native groups who knew the land well. Later, he took part in the Spanish conquest of El Salvador.
Adventures in Peru and Charcas
In 1536, Diego de Roxas traveled to Perú. There, he worked under Governor Cristóbal Vaca de Castro. One of his main jobs was to explore the southern parts of the region.
By 1538, Roxas became the Governor of the Province of Charcas. He was then chosen by Francisco Pizarro, a famous conquistador, to lead an important exploration trip into the Gran Chaco area.
Discoveries and Final Journey
In 1543, Diego de Roxas made a significant discovery. He found the area where the city of Córdoba in Argentina stands today.
During his explorations, Roxas also fought against the Calchaquíes, a strong native tribe. While exploring the high plains of Jujuy, he was killed during a conflict in Santiago del Estero.
Roxas's Family Legacy
Diego de Roxas had descendants who also became important figures. His descendant, General Diego de Roxas y Caravantes, served as a Corregidor (a type of local governor) in the cities of Córdoba and Mendoza. Another family member, Marcos de Roxas Caravantes, became an Alcalde (a mayor or judge) in Chile. Salvador de Rojas, another descendant, was a Captain of militia and lived in Córdoba.
