Playing Career
Early Years and Rapid Wien
Dietmar Kühbauer was born in Heiligenkreuz im Lafnitztal, Austria. He started his professional football journey at Admira Wacker when he was just 16 years old in 1987. He played in the Austrian Football Bundesliga for the first time that year.
After five years, he moved to Rapid Wien, a big club in the same city. There, he helped his team win the league title and a national cup. In 1996, he even played in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final in Brussels, but Rapid lost that match. Fans at Rapid Wien still love "Don Didi," and he was even named to the club's Team of the Century in 1999.
Playing Abroad
In 1997, Kühbauer decided to play football in another country. He joined La Liga team Real Sociedad in Spain. After three years there, he moved to Germany in 2000 to play for Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg.
Two years later, he came back to Austria. He joined his childhood club, SV Mattersburg. He played there until the 2007–08 season, which was when he finished his career as a player.
Playing for Austria
Dietmar Kühbauer also played for his country, Austria. His first game for the national team was in May 1992 against Poland. He was part of the Austrian team that played in the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
He played a total of 55 games for Austria and scored five goals. He announced that he was retiring from international football on 4 September 2005. His last game for Austria was a World Cup qualification match against Poland.
Coaching Career
Starting as a Coach
After he stopped playing, Dietmar Kühbauer started coaching. On 18 November 2008, he became the head coach for Trenkwalder Admira II. In 2010, he became the coach of the main team, FC Admira Mödling. He successfully led them to get promoted to the Austrian Football Bundesliga.
From September 2013 to November 2015, he was the coach of Wolfsberger AC.
Leading Teams to Success
On 1 October 2018, Kühbauer was announced as the new head coach for Rapid Wien. He had only been at SKN St. Pölten for half a year before taking this new role.
In May 2022, Kühbauer became the head coach of LASK. He signed a contract to stay until June 2024. In the 2021–22 season, his team finished in eighth place. However, the 2022–23 season was much better! He led LASK to a third-place finish, which meant they could play in European competitions again. Even with this success, he was replaced at the end of the season because of different ideas about how to plan the team for the next year.
In May 2024, it was announced that Kühbauer would return as head coach of Wolfsberger AC. He took over from Manfred Schmid for the 2024–25 season.
A Difficult Time
In 1997, Dietmar went through a very difficult time. His wife, Michaela, passed away after a serious accident. This sad event deeply affected him, and he decided to move away from Austria to start a new chapter in his football career with Real Sociedad in Spain.
