The Dil-Dil Plateau is a special flat area of land in British Columbia, Canada. It's like a big, flat shelf made from ancient lava flows. This plateau is found in the southern Chilcotin District. It connects the rugged Chilcotin Ranges with the wider Chilcotin Plateau.

What is the Dil-Dil Plateau?

The Dil-Dil Plateau is a unique type of landform. It is called a lava plateau. This means it was formed by many layers of lava flowing out from the ground. The lava spread out and cooled, creating a flat, elevated area.

The plateau is located on the west side of the upper valley of Big Creek. This area is in the Central Interior of British Columbia. The Dil-Dil Plateau is shaped roughly like a rectangle. It covers an area of about 25 to 30 square kilometers.

How Was it Formed?

The Dil-Dil Plateau is made mostly of flat layers of basaltic lava. Basalt is a type of dark, fine-grained volcanic rock. These lava flows happened a very long time ago. Scientists say they are from the Miocene to the Pliocene epochs. These are periods on the geologic time scale.

The lava flows that created the Dil-Dil Plateau are part of a much larger group of volcanic rocks. This larger group is known as the Chilcotin Group. The Chilcotin Group covers a wide area of British Columbia. It shows how much volcanic activity there was in the past.

Its Location and Size

The Dil-Dil Plateau acts like a bridge between two different land areas. To the west, it connects to a part of the Chilcotin Ranges. This part includes mountains like Taseko Mountain and Mount Vic. To the east, it connects to the broader Chilcotin Plateau.

The plateau sits at an elevation of about 2000 to 2300 meters above sea level. This makes it a high, flat area. Its unique position and formation make it an interesting place to study geology.
