Disney's Greatest Villains is a special TV episode from 1977. It was part of The Wonderful World of Disney and first aired on NBC on May 15, 1977. This hour-long show celebrated some of Disney's most famous bad guys and girls.
What Is Disney's Greatest Villains About?
This TV special was a follow-up to an older episode from 1956 called "Our Unsung Villains". The main goal of this new version was to introduce a brand new villainess: Madame Medusa. She was the main bad character in the animated movie The Rescuers, which was coming out soon.
The show is hosted by the Magic Mirror. He was voiced by Hans Conried, who had played the Magic Mirror in other Disney specials before. The Magic Mirror explains why villains are so important in stories. He then shows clips of different Disney villains. His comments are often funny, even if they are a bit biased!
Most villains got a good-sized clip from their movies. However, some were only shown for about 30 seconds. An interesting fact is that the music used for Madame Medusa's part in this special was not the same music used in The Rescuers movie.
"Disney's Greatest Villains" was shown again many times. The last time it aired was on the Disney Channel as part of the "Vault Disney" programming block. Later, in 1983, parts of this special were used in a longer 90-minute show called "A Disney Halloween".
