Divis is a mountain located in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is found north-west of the city of Belfast. Its name comes from the Irish word Dubhais, which means "black ridge."
Divis is the highest point in the Belfast Hills. It stands at 1,568 feet (478 meters) tall. It is connected to the nearby Black Mountain. People in the past might have thought they were one mountain.

About Divis Mountain
Divis is more than just a mountain. It is also a large area of wild, open land. This land is called moorland. You can find the Divis transmitting station right at the top of the mountain.
What is Divis Made Of?
Divis extends north towards the Antrim Plateau. The mountain shares its geology with this plateau. It has a top layer made of basalt rock. Underneath this basalt, you will find limestone. There is also a type of clay called lias clay.
History of Divis
For many years, the Divis area was not open to everyone. It was controlled by the Ministry of Defence. This lasted from 1953 until 2005.
Divis and the Military
During this time, the British Army used Divis for training. The mountain was seen as a very important spot. It offered a great view over Belfast. This was especially true during a period of conflict known as the Troubles. The British Government and military found it very useful.
Divis Today
Divis and the mountains around it are now looked after by the National Trust. This change happened in 2005. The National Trust helps protect special places. Now, more people can visit and enjoy the natural beauty of Divis.
