Dix is a small village located in Kimball County, Nebraska, in the United States. In 2020, about 187 people lived there. It's a quiet place with a rich history tied to the railroads.
History of Dix
Dix started as a simple stop for trains on the Union Pacific Railroad line. It was officially founded as a settlement in 1886. The village got its name from Dixon, Illinois, which was the former home of one of the first people to settle here. However, to avoid confusion with another town called Dixon, the name was shortened to "Dix."
A main road, State Highway 30, runs right through Dix. In 1995, the part of this highway within Dix changed its name from "Main Street" to "Miller Street." This was done to honor Fred H. Miller. Fred worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 30 years and managed the town's train station, also known as a depot. After he retired, the train depot was taken down. Fred Miller also served on the town board and lived near the city park with his wife, Ada B. Miller. You can find their memorial stone in the graveyard south of town, close to Interstate 80.
Geography of Dix
