Djibouti is a country in Africa. It sent athletes to the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. The Olympic Games took place from September 15 to October 1, 2000. This was the fifth time Djibouti had participated in the Summer Olympics. Their first time was in 1984 in Los Angeles.
In 2000, Djibouti sent two athletes to the Olympics. Both of them competed in track and field events. The athletes were Omar Daher Gadid and Roda Ali Wais. Omar competed in the men's marathon, and Roda competed in the women's 800 meters race.

Roda Ali Wais: A Young Pioneer
Roda Ali Wais was the only female athlete from Djibouti at the 2000 Olympics. She made history by being the youngest female from Djibouti to ever compete in the Olympics. She was only 16 years old at the time. She was also the very first woman from Djibouti to take part in the Olympic Games.
Roda competed in the women's 800 meter race. She ran in the second heat of the event. She finished last in her heat. Only the top two athletes from each heat could move on to the next round. Roda did not advance past the first round.

Omar Daher Gadid: The Marathon Runner
Omar Daher Gadid was the only male athlete from Djibouti at the 2000 Olympics. He competed in the challenging men's marathon race. A marathon is a very long running event, usually about 42 kilometers (26 miles).
Omar did not finish the marathon race. This can happen in such a demanding event. He was one of 18 other athletes who also did not complete the race. An athlete from Ethiopia won the gold medal in the men's marathon event that year.
