Djibouti is a country in Africa. In 1988, Djibouti took part in the 1988 Summer Olympics. These games were held in Seoul, South Korea. This was the second time Djibouti had sent athletes to the Olympics.

Six athletes from Djibouti competed in two different sports. They were Hoche Yaya Aden, Ismael Hassan, Talal Omar Abdillahi, Hussein Ahmed Salah, Omar Moussa, and Robleh Ali Adou. Most of them competed in track and field athletics events. Robleh Ali Adou competed in sailing.

Djibouti's First Olympic Medal

Before the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Djibouti had never won an Olympic medal. This changed thanks to Hussein Ahmed Salah. He made history by winning the country's first-ever Olympic medal!

Salah won a bronze medal in the men's marathon race. He finished the race in two hours, ten minutes, and fifty-nine seconds. This was only twenty-seven seconds slower than the gold medalist. His amazing performance brought great pride to Djibouti.

Athletes in Track and Field

Five male athletes from Djibouti competed in track and field events. These athletes were Hoche Yaya Aden, Ismael Hassan, Talal Omar Abdillahi, Hussein Ahmed Salah, and Omar Moussa. For Aden, Hassan, Abdillahi, and Moussa, this was their first time at the Summer Olympic Games. Hussein Ahmed Salah had also competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Hoche Yaya Aden's Race

Hoche Yaya Aden competed in the men's 1500 meters race. He finished twelfth in his qualifying heat. This meant he did not move on to the next round of the competition. Medals in this event were won by athletes from Kenya, Great Britain, and East Germany.

Ismael Hassan's Race

Ismael Hassan competed in the men's 5000 meters race. He finished fourteenth in his qualifying heat. Like Aden, he did not advance to the next round. The medals for this event went to athletes from Kenya, West Germany, and East Germany.
