The country of Djibouti made its very first appearance at the Olympic Games in 1984. This exciting event took place in Los Angeles, California, United States. The Games ran from July 28 to August 12. Djibouti sent three athletes to compete, and all of them were men. They all took part in the challenging marathon race. Even though they didn't win any medals this time, their participation was a big step for their country in the world of sports!
Djibouti's First Olympic Journey
The 1984 Summer Olympics were a special moment for Djibouti. It was the first time athletes from their country competed on the world's biggest sports stage. Three brave athletes represented Djibouti in Los Angeles. All three were runners who specialized in the marathon. The marathon is a very long race, covering 42.195 kilometers (about 26 miles).
The three athletes were Djama Robleh, Ahmed Salah, and Omar Abdillahi Charmarke. They all competed in the men's marathon event. The race began at Santa Monica College and finished inside the famous Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The Marathon Runners
Djama Robleh was chosen to be the flag bearer for Djibouti. This means he proudly carried his country's flag during the opening ceremony. In the marathon race, Djama Robleh showed great skill and endurance. He finished in an impressive eighth place overall. His time for the marathon was two hours, eleven minutes, and thirty-nine seconds.
Ahmed Salah was another strong runner for Djibouti. The 1984 Olympics marathon was only his sixth time competing in such a long race. He finished in twentieth place. Ahmed Salah would later become a true Olympic hero for Djibouti. At the 1988 Olympics, he won a bronze medal. He is still the only person from Djibouti to ever win an Olympic medal!
Omar Abdillahi Charmarke also competed in the marathon for Djibouti. He completed the tough race in two hours, nineteen minutes, and eleven seconds. He finished in thirty-second place.
