Domingo Rey d'Harcourt (born 1883 – died February 7, 1939) was a military leader during the Spanish Civil War. He was part of the Nationalist side in the conflict.
He had become a Colonel in the artillery branch of the army. When the military uprising against the Republican Government began, he joined it. This uprising soon led to the start of the Spanish Civil War.
Role in the Spanish Civil War
During the Civil War, Rey d'Harcourt was in charge of the Nationalist soldiers stationed in the city of Teruel. This was during a very important fight called the Battle of Teruel.
The Battle of Teruel
His soldiers were greatly outnumbered by the Republican forces. Even so, Rey d'Harcourt and his troops fought very bravely. They held out in four main parts of the city. These places were the Civil Governor's Building, the Bank of Spain, the Convent of Santa Clara, and the Seminary.
Republican radio stations announced that Teruel had fallen. But Rey d'Harcourt and about 4,000 soldiers were still fighting. They had very little water, few medical supplies, and not much food. Because of this, he was eventually forced to give up on January 8, 1938.
After the Surrender
Even though he fought heroically, some leaders on the Nationalist side were not happy about his surrender.
After his capture, he was held as a prisoner by the Republic. First, he was in Valencia, and then in Barcelona. During a major Nationalist attack called the Catalonia Offensive, he was being moved towards the French border. Sadly, he died while being moved, along with 42 other prisoners from the Battle of Teruel. Among them was Anselmo Polanco, who was the Bishop of Teruel.
