Dorset is a tiny community in Hubbard County, Minnesota, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own official town government.
This small place, with only about 22 people living there, is located in Henrietta Township. It's about 6 miles (10 km) east of Park Rapids and 6 miles west of Nevis. Several roads, like Hubbard County State-Aid Highways 7 and 18, and State Highway 226, pass through Dorset. The Heartland State Trail, a popular path for biking and walking, also runs through the community.
A Look Back in Time
Dorset got its name from railroad officials many years ago. A post office opened in Dorset in 1898. It served the community for a long time before closing in 1964.
In September 2014, a big fire caused by a lightning storm damaged the town. Two popular restaurants, the Dorset House and Compañeros Mexican Restaurant, were destroyed. Luckily, both restaurants were rebuilt and reopened in May 2016.
The Mayor of Dorset
Dorset has a very special mayor! The position of mayor is mostly symbolic. This means the mayor doesn't actually run the town. Instead, a group of five local business owners makes the important decisions.
The town holds a yearly election for mayor during its "Taste of Dorset" festival. Anyone can pay one dollar to write a name on a slip of paper and put it into a hat. Then, a name is drawn randomly to pick the new mayor. This fun tradition has led to some very young mayors!
Young Mayors of Dorset
- In August 2012, a three-year-old boy named Robert "Bobby" Tufts became mayor. His name was chosen from the hat.
- Bobby Tufts was so popular that he was elected for a second term in August 2013!
- In 2014, Bobby Tufts lost his re-election to 16-year-old Eric Mueller.
- Bobby's younger brother, James, who was also three years old, was elected mayor in August 2015.
- In 2016, four-year-old Gwendolyn Davis from Utah won the mayorship.
- From 2021 to 2022, Jade Kruger of Moorhead served as mayor.
- The mayor for 2022 to 2023 was ten-year-old Evan Johnson from Minnetonka.
- Currently, "Bear" Mohlin of Bemidji holds the office of Mayor of Dorset for the 2023 to 2024 term.
