Douglas Martin (born January 13, 1989) is an American former professional football player. He was a running back in the National Football League (NFL) for seven seasons. Doug played college football for the Boise State Broncos. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked him in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft.

Early Life and High School Sports

Doug Martin was born in Oakland, California. He grew up in Stockton, California. Doug went to St. Mary's High School. He was a star in both football and track.

As a junior, Doug ran for 1,950 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. He was named first-team all-area for his amazing performance. In his senior year, he rushed for 1,234 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also won the team's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

Doug was also a talented track & field athlete. He ran the 100-meter dash in 11.15 seconds. He also had impressive jumps in the long jump and triple jump. Doug chose to play college football at Boise State.

College Football Career

Doug Martin played for Boise State University from 2007 to 2011. He ended his college career with 3,431 rushing yards. He also scored 43 touchdowns.

In 2009, Doug's role on the team grew. He had several games with over 100 rushing yards. He even scored four rushing touchdowns in two different games. He finished the season with 769 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns.

As a junior in 2010, Doug continued to shine. He rushed for 1,260 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also caught 28 passes for 338 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. In the 2010 Maaco Bowl Las Vegas, he rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown.

In his senior year in 2011, Doug was a key player for the Broncos. He rushed for 1,299 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also had 28 receptions for 255 yards and two receiving touchdowns. In the 2011 Maaco Bowl Las Vegas, he returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. He also rushed for 151 yards and another touchdown. Doug was named the MVP of that bowl game.

He was known as "Muscle Hamster" by his teammates. This nickname came from his strength and smaller size.

2012 Season: A Rookie Star

Doug Martin had an amazing start to his NFL career. In his first game, he rushed for 95 yards. He scored his first professional touchdown in his second game. On October 25, he rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a pass for a touchdown.

One week later, he had a historic game against the Oakland Raiders. He rushed for 251 yards and scored four touchdowns! This tied an NFL record for rushing touchdowns in one half. He also became the first NFL player to score long touchdown runs of 70-plus, 45-plus, and 65-plus yards in a single game. Doug broke the Buccaneers' team records for rushing yards and touchdowns in a game. He was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for this incredible performance.

Doug finished his rookie season with 1,454 rushing yards. This set a new Buccaneers' rookie rushing record. He also had nearly 500 receiving yards. He was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team. Doug was also chosen for the 2013 Pro Bowl, which is a special game for the best players in the league.

2013 and 2014 Seasons

In 2013, Doug rushed for 144 yards in a game against the New Orleans Saints. However, he got a shoulder injury later in the season. This injury caused him to miss the rest of the year. He finished with 456 rushing yards and one touchdown.

Doug returned from his injury in 2014. He scored his first touchdown of the season in a win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had his best game of the season with 108 rushing yards against the New Orleans Saints. He ended the 2014 season with 494 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

2015 Season: Comeback Year

Before the 2015 season, the Buccaneers decided not to extend Doug's contract. This meant he could become a free agent after the season. But Doug had a fantastic comeback year!

He had several games with over 100 rushing yards. Against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught a receiving touchdown. He ran for 235 yards in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Doug finished the 2015 season with 1,402 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. He also had 271 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown. Because of his great performance, he was selected for his second 2016 Pro Bowl. He was also named a First-team All-Pro, which means he was one of the best players in the entire league.

2016 and 2017 Seasons

In March 2016, Doug signed a new five-year contract with the Buccaneers. However, his performance in the 2016 season was not as strong as the year before. He finished with 421 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

In 2017, Doug played in 11 games. He rushed for 406 yards and three touchdowns. On February 20, 2018, the Buccaneers released Doug Martin after six seasons with the team.

Oakland Raiders

2018 Season

On March 15, 2018, Doug Martin signed a one-year contract with the Oakland Raiders. When the Raiders' starting running back got injured, Doug stepped up. He became the starter for the rest of the season.

He had a great game against the Denver Broncos, rushing for 107 yards and a touchdown. He also had another 100-yard rushing game in the final game of the season. Overall, in 2018, he finished with 723 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
