Dracunculus is a fascinating group of plants known for their striking appearance and unusual features. These plants grow from a special underground stem called a tuber. There are two main types, or species, in this genus. They are famous for their large, often purple, flower-like parts and their unique, sometimes strong, smell.
The plants in the Dracunculus genus belong to the Araceae family. They are known as perennials, meaning they live for more than two years. Each plant grows from a tuber, which is like a storage organ underground.

What Makes Them Special?
Dracunculus plants have a very distinctive look. Their most noticeable feature is a large, colorful leaf-like structure called a spathe. This spathe often wraps around a central spike called a spadix. For many Dracunculus plants, the spathe is a deep purple color. These parts often appear before the leaves fully grow.
The leaves themselves are usually dark green. They often have interesting white patterns or spots. The shape of the leaves is described as pedate, which means they look a bit like a bird's foot with lobes spreading out.
The Unusual Scent
When the spathe opens, it often releases a very strong and unusual smell. This scent might not be pleasant to humans, but it serves a very important purpose for the plant! It helps to attract certain flies, especially those from the Lucilia genus, and sometimes beetles. These insects then help the plant with its pollination, allowing it to create seeds.
Where Does it Grow?
These unique plants are naturally found in warm, sunny regions. Their native homes include the areas around the Mediterranean Sea, the island of Madeira, and the Canary Islands. You can often spot them growing in rocky places, on hillsides, or even in areas of disturbed ground.
Meet the Species: Two Types of Dragon Arum
There are two main species within the Dracunculus genus. Each has its own specific native range:
- Canary Island Dragon Arum (Dracunculus canariensis): This species is found on the Canary Islands and Madeira.
- Common Dragon Arum (Dracunculus vulgaris): This is the more widely known species. It grows naturally across Turkey, Algeria, and southern Europe. This includes countries like Spain, Italy, Portugal, France, former Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece, and Bulgaria. It has also spread and now grows in some parts of the United States. This species is sometimes planted in gardens because of its striking appearance.
