The name Dranesville comes from James Drane. He moved to the area from Maryland in 1810. He started a place called Drane's Tavern. This old tavern is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical building.

Dranesville is located in the northern part of Fairfax County. It is bordered by Route 7 to the northeast. The border with Loudoun County is to the northwest. The town of Herndon is to the southwest. Reston is to the southeast. The original settlement of Dranesville is right where Route 7 and Route 193 cross.
Dranesville is about 23 miles (37 km) southeast of Washington, D.C. if you take Route 7 and I-66. The city of Leesburg is about 13 miles (21 km) northwest on Route 7. Washington Dulles International Airport is also nearby, about 9 miles (14 km) to the southwest.
