D'Andre Lawan "Dre" Kirkpatrick (born October 26, 1989) is a former American football player. He played the cornerback position in the National Football League (NFL) for ten seasons. A cornerback's main job is to cover the other team's receivers and stop them from catching the ball.

Kirkpatrick played college football for the famous Alabama Crimson Tide. He was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft. He also played for the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers.

High School and College Career

Kirkpatrick went to Gadsden City High School in Alabama. He was a star player on the school's football team, the Gadsden City Titans. In his three years on the team, he made 193 tackles and 17 interceptions, which is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player.

He was so good that recruiting websites like Rivals.com and Scout.com gave him a five-star rating. This is the highest rating a high school player can get. Many top colleges wanted him to play for them. In 2009, he announced on TV that he would play for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

At Alabama, Kirkpatrick continued to be a top player. He helped his team win two BCS National Championships in 2009 and 2011.

Professional Career

Getting Drafted into the NFL

After his successful college career, experts expected Kirkpatrick to be a top pick in the 2012 NFL draft. He was invited to the NFL Combine, where college players show their skills to NFL teams.

On draft day, the Cincinnati Bengals selected Kirkpatrick in the first round with the 17th overall pick. He was the third cornerback chosen in the entire draft.

Kirkpatrick signed a four-year contract with the Bengals worth over $8.6 million. His first season in 2012 was difficult because of injuries. He hurt his knee before training camp started and missed the first seven games of the season. He played in only five games as a rookie.

Becoming a Key Player

In 2013, Kirkpatrick started to play more. He got his first career sack and his first interception. In a game against the Baltimore Ravens, he intercepted the ball twice and returned one for a 21-yard touchdown. It was the first touchdown of his NFL career.

By 2015, Kirkpatrick had earned a spot as a starting cornerback for the Bengals. That season, he had his best year for tackles, with 70. He also led the team with 16 pass deflections, which is when a player knocks the ball away before a receiver can catch it.

Later Years in Cincinnati

Kirkpatrick remained a starter for the Bengals for several more years. In 2017, he signed a new five-year contract worth $52.5 million. In a game against the Denver Broncos that year, he made an amazing play. He intercepted a pass in the end zone and ran it back 101 yards.

He played for the Bengals for eight seasons in total. The team released him on March 31, 2020.

San Francisco 49ers (2021)

Kirkpatrick signed with the San Francisco 49ers in September 2021. He played in six games for the team before he was released in November. This was his last season in the NFL.
