Drew Antrion Coleman (born April 22, 1983) is a former American football player. He played as a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL). Drew played college football for Texas Christian University (TCU). The New York Jets picked him in the 2006 NFL draft. He played for the Jets for five seasons. Later, he also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Growing Up and High School Sports

Drew Coleman grew up in Henderson, Texas. He finished high school there in 2001. Drew was an amazing all-around athlete. He played many positions in football, like quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive back. He even returned punts and kicks! In his senior year, he led his team to a District championship.

Drew won many awards in high school. He was named District MVP and All-East Texas player. He was also the Rusk County player of the year. He earned All-State honors too. Drew was also a great basketball player. He was named District and All-East Texas Defensive MVP in his junior and senior years.

College Football Career

After high school, Drew went to Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas. For two years, he played wide receiver and quarterback for the Cardinals. In 2002, he was named the Southwest Junior College Football Conference Player of the Year. He also won the Offensive Player of the Year award.

Then, Drew transferred to Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth. At TCU, his coach, Gary Patterson, changed his position to cornerback. He was injured for most of the 2004 season. But in 2005, as a senior, he started all 12 games. His team, the TCU Horned Frogs, won the Mountain West Conference Championship.

Drew was second on his team with 4 interceptions. He also tied for first with 8 passes broken up. After the season, he was named Second-team All-MWC. He studied speech communication in college.

Playing in the NFL

New York Jets (2006–2010)

The New York Jets picked Drew Coleman in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL draft. He was the 189th player chosen overall. As a new player (rookie) in 2006, Drew played in all 17 games. The Jets made it to the playoffs that year. He often played as a nickelback. He also became a strong player on special teams.

In his first game, he forced a fumble against the New England Patriots. He started four games as a cornerback in his rookie year. The Jets named him Special Teams Player of the Week for a win against Buffalo. In 2007, he continued to play on special teams. Later that season, he got his first interception against the Miami Dolphins. He also forced a fumble during a sack against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In 2009, Drew made 22 tackles. He had a great 2010 season with 41 tackles. He also had four sacks, five forced fumbles, and one interception. He stepped up when Darrelle Revis was injured against the Patriots. Drew helped the Jets defense stop the Patriots from scoring touchdowns in the second half.

In the next game against the Miami Dolphins, Drew intercepted Chad Henne. This stopped the Dolphins from making a comeback. The following week, he sacked Brett Favre against the Vikings. He finished that game with 3 tackles and 1 sack. In week 6, he made 5 tackles in a win against the Denver Broncos.

His best game that season was against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week 15. Drew made 10 tackles, 2 sacks, and forced 2 fumbles. In the Jets' last regular season game, he had 2 tackles and 1 sack.

Jacksonville Jaguars (2011)

Drew Coleman signed a three-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars on July 29, 2011. He played in all 16 games during the 2011 season. However, the Jaguars released him on May 3, 2012.

Detroit Lions (2012)

Drew signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions on July 25, 2012. He was placed on injured reserve on August 16, 2012. He was released from injured reserve a week later.

Coaching Career

After his playing career, Drew Coleman became a coach. He was a defensive assistant for the Rice Owls football team. Currently, he works as the defensive coordinator for West Brook High School in Beaumont, Texas.
