Early Life and Education
Driss Jettou was born in a town called El Jadida in Morocco. He grew up there and later went to El Khawarizmi college in Casablanca for his high school studies.
In 1964, he earned a special high school diploma in mathematics. He then went to Rabat University where he studied physics and chemistry. He graduated from there in 1966.
He also studied business management in London and received a diploma in 1968.
Career Before Politics
Before becoming a politician, Driss Jettou worked in many different businesses. From 1968 to 1993, he held leadership positions in several Moroccan companies.
He also led the Moroccan Federation of Leather Industries (FEDIC). He was a member of the General Confederation of Companies in Morocco (CGEM). Later, he became the vice-president of the Moroccan Association of Exporters (ASMEX). These roles show he was very involved in the business world.
Political Journey

Driss Jettou began his political career in 1993. King Hassan II appointed him as the Minister of Trade and Industry. This was his first big government job.
He later became the Minister of Economy and Finance from August 1997 to March 1998. Then, in 2001, he served as the Minister of Interior.
Becoming Prime Minister
In October 2002, King Mohammed VI chose Driss Jettou to be the Prime Minister. This was a big step because he was not part of any political party at the time.
Even though he was independent, he led a government made up of different political parties working together. The main parties in his government were the Socialist Union of Forces for Progress and the Istiqlal Party.
One of his major achievements as Prime Minister was helping Morocco sign a free trade agreement with the United States in 2004. This agreement made it easier for goods to be traded between the two countries.
A Technocrat Leader
Driss Jettou was known as a "technocrat." This means he was an expert in his field and focused on practical solutions, rather than being a traditional politician who belongs to a specific party. King Mohammed VI wanted someone with this kind of expertise to lead the country.
After the parliamentary election in September 2007, King Mohammed VI appointed Abbas El Fassi as the new Prime Minister. Driss Jettou's term ended on September 19, 2007.
Later Roles
In 2012, Driss Jettou was appointed as the President of the Audits Court. This court checks how government money is spent and helps fight corruption.
In December 2019, the King of Morocco also appointed him to a special committee. This committee works on plans for Morocco's future development.
