Dubislav Gneomar von Natzmer (1654–1739) was a very important military leader in Prussia. He became a Generalfeldmarschall, which is the highest rank in the army. He was also a trusted friend of the House of Hohenzollern, the royal family of Prussia.
Family Background
Natzmer was born in a place called Gutzmin in Farther Pomerania. His family was noble, meaning they came from a long line of important people. They had been around since the year 1202! His father, Joachim Heinrich von Natzmer, was a local leader.
Dubislav Gneomar von Natzmer was married two times. His first wife was Sophie von Wreech. Later, he married Charlotte Justine von Gersdorff. He had two sons with Charlotte: Carl Dubislav and Heinrich Ernst. Sadly, both of his sons died before he did. Because of this, the part of the Natzmer family that lived in Pomerania ended when Dubislav Gneomar died in Berlin.
However, other parts of the Natzmer family lived in different areas like Brandenburg and Saxony. Many members of his family served in the army. For example, ten Natzmer family members fought against Napoleon Bonaparte. Also, Oldwig von Natzmer was a close friend of Emperor William I.
Military Career Highlights
Dubislav Gneomar von Natzmer started his military career in the Dutch army when he was young. In 1677, he joined the army of Brandenburg-Prussia. He started as a lieutenant in a special cavalry unit.
He fought in many battles against Sweden, including the siege of Stettin. He even worked closely with another famous general, Georg von Derfflinger. Natzmer quickly moved up in rank. In 1680, he became a Stabshauptmann. He also took part in the Great Turkish War in 1686. After that, the ruler, Elector Frederick William, made him a Generaladjutant.
Natzmer created a new special cavalry regiment made up of German noblemen. It was first called the Grands Mousquetaires and later the Gensdarmes. He was their first commander. This regiment fought for the Dutch Republic against King Louis XIV of France in the War of the Spanish Succession. They fought in places like Brabant and Flanders.
In 1703, he was captured during the Battle of Höchstädt, but he was released soon after. He was promoted to Generalmajor and led the Prussian cavalry in the famous Battle of Blenheim. He was badly wounded in this battle. Before the battle, his excellent knowledge of the area was very helpful to the army leaders.
He continued to serve with great skill as a Generalleutnant in other important battles, like Malplaquet and Oudenaarde. In 1714, he received a very important award, the Order of the Black Eagle. After the capture of Stralsund, he was promoted to General der Kavallerie. Finally, in 1728, he reached the highest military rank: Prussian Generalfeldmarschall.
Trusted Advisor to the Monarchy
Dubislav Gneomar von Natzmer had a close relationship with the Prussian royal family. He was a trusted advisor to the king.
Once, the young Crown Prince Frederick tried to run away from his father, King Frederick William I. Natzmer was ordered to find Frederick's friend, Hans Hermann von Katte, who was involved in the plan. Natzmer gave Katte some time to get rid of any important papers and try to escape. However, Katte didn't use the time well, so Natzmer had to arrest him.
The king was very angry and even thought about punishing his son, Frederick, very severely. Natzmer was one of the king's advisors who bravely suggested that the king should be merciful to his son. This advice helped save Frederick from a much harsher punishment.
Later, in 1731, when Frederick was at Küstrin, he wrote a letter to Natzmer. In the letter, Frederick shared his idea for Prussia to take over some land from Poland. This would connect East Prussia with Prussian Pomerania. Years later, when Frederick became King Frederick the Great, he did exactly that. He created West Prussia from that territory in 1772.
