Duenweg (pronounced dun-ə-WAYG) is a city in Jasper County, Missouri, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,495 people lived there.

Duenweg is part of the Joplin, Missouri metropolitan area. It is located just east of the City of Joplin. Major highways like Interstate 44 and Interstate 49 pass near the city. Business Loop 44 also runs through the middle of town.

History of Duenweg

Early Settlement and Mining

The Osage tribe lived in this area a long time ago. European-American settlers began to arrive in 1855. Two brothers, Elijah C. and James C. Webb, moved here from Tennessee.

Later, in 1895, Otto Duenweg and his father, Louis, became interested in the mining here. They bought many mining properties in the area. Because of their work, the mining camp became known as Duenweg. A post office opened in Duenweg that same year.

Railways and Growth

Rail lines were built to help the miners and the mines. The Southwest Missouri Electric Railway Company extended its line to Duenweg in 1903. This railway already connected nearby cities like Joplin and Webb City.

In 1915, the railway was involved in an interesting event. On February 17, some people tried to rob the Duenweg Bank. They planned to escape on the streetcar to Joplin. However, they missed the car by just one minute. Because they missed the train, they could not get away easily.

Becoming a City

Duenweg was not officially a city until 1954. That year, it became known as the City of Duenweg. In 2002, the city grew bigger. It added more land to its northern and southern parts.
