The Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn was a special title given to a member of the British royal family. This title was part of the Peerage of Great Britain, which is a system of noble ranks.

The name came from two places: Cumberland, a county in England, and Strathearn, an area in Scotland.

About the Dukedom

The title of Duke of Cumberland had been created a few times before. It was used in both the English and British systems of nobility.

How the Title Started

The title of Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn was created on October 22, 1766. This special double dukedom, along with the title of Earl of Dublin in Ireland, was given to Prince Henry.

Prince Henry was the third son of Frederick, Prince of Wales. He was also the grandson of King George II.

Why the Title Ended

Prince Henry did not have any children who could legally inherit the title. Because of this, when he passed away, the title "Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn" ended. This is called becoming "extinct."

Later on, a new title called Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale was created.
