Discovering Duwamish Head
Duwamish Head is a special place located at the very top of West Seattle in Washington. It reaches out into the waters of Elliott Bay. This area has a rich history and is important to the local community.
A Look Back in Time
This land has been important for a very long time. It holds stories from the past, from ancient art to fun amusement parks.
Ancient Art and Early Settlements
Long ago, a large rock covered with petroglyphs (ancient rock carvings) lay on the beach at Duwamish Head. These carvings were made by early people. In 1856, the Duwamish people were moved to a special area here. This area was known as Holderness Point back then.
Fun and Landmarks Today
From 1907 to 1913, Duwamish Head was home to an exciting amusement park called Luna Park. Today, Alki Beach Park stretches from Duwamish Head towards Alki Point. The area right at Duwamish Head is sometimes called "Anchor Park." This is because a very large, 5,000-pound anchor is located there.
