Dwayne Romel Smith (born 12 April 1983) is a former Barbadian international cricket player. He played for the West Indies in all three main types of cricket games. Dwayne is known as an all-rounder because he is good at both batting and bowling. He hits the ball hard with his right hand and bowls at a medium speed. He is also a great fielder, catching balls quickly.
Dwayne Smith was a key part of the West Indies team that won the 2012 T20 World Cup. He played for his home team, Barbados, for many years. He also played for several teams around the world in the fast-paced Twenty20 format. These teams included the Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. He also played for Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League and New South Wales in Australia. On March 1, 2017, Dwayne Smith announced he was retiring from playing international cricket.
Smith once held the record for the highest strike rate in a T20I game. This means he scored runs very quickly. His record was 414.28, which was later broken in 2023.

Playing for Teams in His Home Country
Dwayne Smith started his professional cricket career playing for Barbados in January 2002. This was in a match called the Busta Cup. In his fifth game that season, he achieved two important things. He took his first wicket (which means he got a player out). He also scored his first century, which is 100 runs in one turn at bat.
In the 2002–03 season, he bowled more often and got seven wickets. His batting also got better. In October 2003, Smith played his first List-A match. He scored a duck (zero runs) in his first game. But he quickly improved, ending the season with a high score of 92 runs.
Smith scored the most runs in the 2009 WICB Cup tournament. He later helped Barbados win the 2011 WICB Cup title. He also won the 2014 CPL title with the Barbados Tridents. In the final game, he scored an amazing 59 runs, helping his team win.
Smith was the top scorer again in the 2014 Regional Super 50 tournament. He scored 83 runs for Barbados in the final against Trinidad and Tobago. This helped Barbados win the tournament. Smith was named the "man of the match" for his excellent performance.
Playing in the Indian Premier League
In 2008, Dwayne Smith joined the Mumbai Indians team in the first-ever IPL season. He played four games and was very good at bowling, taking 5 wickets.
The next year, the Deccan Chargers bought Smith for US$100,000. He was much better at batting this time, scoring 215 runs. The Deccan Chargers won the tournament that year. Smith played for them again in 2010 but only in three matches.
In 2012, he returned to the Mumbai Indians. On May 6, 2012, he played a very important role in a game against the Chennai Super Kings. He hit the ball for a six and two fours in a row when his team needed 14 runs from only three balls to win. This helped Mumbai Indians get a big victory.
In 2014, the Chennai Super Kings bought Smith for a large amount of money, showing how valuable he was.
Playing in the Pakistan Super League
Smith joined Islamabad United in the 2016 season. He joined the team when they were halfway through their games. In the final match of the 2016 season, Smith was named "Man of the Match." He scored 73 runs from 51 balls, leading his team to win the championship.
He stayed with Islamabad United for the 2017 season. He was the top run scorer for his team, making 274 runs in 9 matches.
Playing County Cricket in England
Dwayne Smith played for the English team Sussex for three seasons. He first joined them in 2008 for their Twenty20 Cup season. He played so well, especially scoring 72 runs not out in one game, that he signed a longer contract. That season, Smith also helped Sussex win the Division one title in another tournament called the Pro40.
In the next season, Smith played an even bigger role for Sussex. They reached two finals. They lost the first one, the Friends Provident Trophy. But they won the next final, the Twenty20 Cup, against Somerset. Smith was named "man of the match" for scoring 59 runs. Sussex also won the Pro40 again that season. Smith even took a hat-trick (getting three wickets in three balls) in a game against Nottinghamshire.
Because they won the Twenty20 Cup, Sussex qualified for the Champions League. Smith chose to play for Sussex in this tournament instead of his IPL team, the Deccan Chargers.
Playing for New South Wales
Smith played for New South Wales in Australia during the 2009–10 KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. He played in all five group games. Even though his batting was not his best, he took 6 wickets, which was very helpful for his team.
Other T20 Teams
For his great performances in 2013, Dwayne Smith was chosen for the ESPNcricinfo CLT20 best team.
In June 2019, he was picked to play for the Winnipeg Hawks in the 2019 Global T20 Canada tournament.
He was also chosen to play for the India Capitals and Urbanrisers Hyderabad in the Legends League Cricket.
International Cricket Career
Becoming a Star Player
After playing well in the 2002–03 Red Stripe Bowl, Smith was chosen to join the West Indies team touring South Africa. He made his first Test match appearance in the third game of that series. In his second turn at bat, he scored 105 runs without getting out. This made him the eleventh West Indies player ever to score a century in his very first Test match. Smith played nine more Test matches over the next two years. His debut century is still his highest score in a Test game. During that tour, he also played his first One Day International (ODI) match.
Regular Player in ODIs (2004–2007)
In 2004, Smith played in five ODI matches against England. Later that year, he had a very successful ODI series against Bangladesh. Smith won two "man of the match" awards, helping the West Indies win the series 3–0. In one game, he scored 62 runs not out. In another, he took 3 wickets and scored 23 runs.
Later in 2004, Smith had a difficult tour of England. After not playing well in a tournament, he had to go home because he injured his shoulder. This injury meant he missed the Champions Trophy that year. He did not play another international match until May 2005.
When he returned to the team in 2005, he played five ODI matches against South Africa. He did not perform well in these games. However, he had more success later that year in the Indian Oil Cup against India and Sri Lanka.
In early 2006, during a tour against New Zealand, Smith made his biggest contribution with the ball. He took 9 wickets, including 5 wickets for only 45 runs in one game. This was his best bowling performance in an ODI and earned him another "man of the match" award. Smith also played his first Twenty20 International game during this tour.
Champions Trophy and World Cup
Smith was part of the West Indies team for the 2006 Champions Trophy. The West Indies had won this title in 2004 and were trying to win it again. They reached the final, but Smith did not play much in the tournament. He only took two wickets and scored eight runs in five matches. He was not chosen to play in the final game against Australia.
Returning to International Cricket
After almost two and a half years, Smith returned to the West Indies team in early 2010. He played in ODI and T20I matches in Australia. Smith played well, but the West Indies team lost the ODI series 4–0. After playing two more matches against Zimbabwe, Smith was again out of the team. He was called back for a Twenty20 series against England in September 2011.
After Retiring from International Cricket
After retiring from playing for his country, Dwayne Smith continued to play in other cricket leagues. In 2017, he played in the 2017 Hong Kong T20 Blitz. In this tournament, he became the first player, and the first international player, to score a century in the Hong Kong T20 Blitz.
