Early Life and Cycling Roots
Dylan Groenewegen grew up in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His family had a long history with bicycles. His grandfather, Ko Zieleman, built custom bike frames. Dylan received his first bike from his grandfather when he was seven years old.
His family's bike frame business started in 1928. Dylan's father, Gerrie, continued this tradition. When Dylan was 17, he even went to a special school to learn how to build bike frames, just like the generations before him.
Dylan's Professional Cycling Journey
Starting Out: Pre-World Tour Years
Before joining the biggest cycling teams, Dylan had to make a choice in 2014. He could join either Team Roompot or BMC Racing Team. He chose Team Roompot because they showed a lot of belief in him.
Joining LottoNL–Jumbo (2016–2021)
In October 2015, Dylan announced he would join the LottoNL–Jumbo team. This was a big step in his career.
2016: National Champion
In June 2016, Dylan won the Dutch National Road Race Championships. He was the fastest in the final sprint, beating another rider named Wouter Wippert. Experts noted that his bike was easy for mechanics to work with. He also won a stage in the Tour of Britain.
2017: Tour de France Stage Win
Dylan started 2017 strong at the Dubai Tour. He finished second overall and won the best young rider award. He then won the first stage of the Tour de Yorkshire in a very close finish.
Later that year, he competed in his first Tour de France. He had several top-10 finishes in the early stages. The highlight was winning the final stage on the famous Champs-Élysées in Paris. This is a dream for many sprinters!
2018: More Tour de France Success
In February 2018, Dylan won a stage at the Dubai Tour. He briefly led the race but lost his lead after a penalty. This happened because he rode too close behind his team car after a bike problem.
At the Tour de France, Dylan won two stages in a row. He won stage 7, which was the longest stage of that year's race. The next day, he won stage 8. He said the sprint was "a bit messy" but he took advantage of the chance.
2019: Team and Individual Wins
In March 2019, Dylan won the first two stages of Paris–Nice. He also won the Three Days of Bruges–De Panne by sprinting past other top riders.
His team, Jumbo-Visma, won the team time trial on stage 2 of the Tour de France. This helped his teammate, Mike Teunissen, keep the overall lead. Dylan then won stage 7 of the Tour de France, which was another long stage. He also won three stages in the Tour of Britain.
2020: A Challenging Year
Dylan started 2020 with wins in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and the UAE Tour.
However, during stage 1 of the Tour de Pologne in August, Dylan was involved in a serious crash with another rider, Fabio Jakobsen. Dylan also crashed and broke his collarbone. After an investigation, Dylan was given a nine-month ban from racing. Both Dylan and his team apologized for the incident.
Moving to Team BikeExchange–Jayco (2022–Present)
In December 2021, Dylan signed a three-year contract with the Australian team Team BikeExchange–Jayco. He quickly found success with his new team.
In 2022, he won stages in several races, including the Tour de Hongrie, the Tour of Slovenia, and the 2022 Saudi Tour. He also won stage 3 of the 2022 Tour de France, which was his first Tour de France stage win since 2019.
In 2024, Dylan won stage 6 of the 2024 Tour de France in a very close sprint finish. He also won the Dutch National Road Race Championships again that year. In 2025, he continued to win stages in races like the 2025 Tour of Slovenia and the 2025 Tour de Hongrie.
