Dylan Groenewegen (born 21 June 1993) is a Dutch professional racing cyclist. He rides for the UCI WorldTeam Team Jayco–AlUla. Dylan is known for being a very fast sprinter in bike races.

He has won six individual stages in the famous Tour de France race. He also won one team time trial stage there. Dylan has won the Dutch National Road Race Championships twice. He has also won many stages in other big races like the Tour of Norway, Tour of Britain, and Paris–Nice. In 2020, Dylan was involved in a serious crash during the Tour de Pologne. Because of this, he was not allowed to race for nine months.

Early Life and Family History

Dylan Groenewegen was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His family has a long history with bicycles. His grandfather, Ko Zieleman, built custom bike frames. Dylan got his first bike from him when he was seven years old.

Ko Zieleman owned a shop that sold bike frames. His father started this business in 1928. Dylan's father, Gerrie, continues to run the shop today. When Dylan was 17, he went to a special school to learn how to build bike frames. He wanted to follow in his family's footsteps.

Dylan's Cycling Career

Dylan Groenewegen joined his first professional team in 2012. He quickly became known as a strong sprinter.

Joining LottoNL–Jumbo (2016–2021)

In October 2015, Dylan signed a three-year deal with the LottoNL–Jumbo team. He started racing with them in 2016.

Winning the Dutch Championship (2016)

In June 2016, Dylan won the Dutch National Road Race Championships. He was faster than all the other riders in the final sprint. Experts said his bike was easy for mechanics to work with. He also won a stage in the Tour of Britain that year.

First Tour de France Stage Win (2017)

Dylan had a great start to 2017. He finished second in two stages of the Dubai Tour. He also won the best young rider award there. In April, he won the first stage of the Tour de Yorkshire. It was a very close finish!

Later, in May, he won two stages at the Tour of Norway. His biggest win came in July at the Tour de France. He won the very last stage on the famous Champs-Élysées in Paris. This was a huge achievement for him.

More Tour de France Success (2018)

In February 2018, Dylan won stage 1 of the Dubai Tour. He was leading the race for a while.

At the Tour de France, Dylan won two stages in a row. He won stage 7, which was the longest stage of the tour. He beat other top sprinters like Fernando Gaviria and Peter Sagan. The next day, he won stage 8 as well. He said the sprint was "a bit messy" but he took advantage of a "good opportunity."

Teamwork and More Wins (2019)

In March 2019, Dylan won the first two stages of Paris-Nice. He showed his strength by being at the front of the race and winning the sprint. Later that month, he won the Three Days of Bruges–De Panne. He squeezed through a small gap to win the sprint.

His team, Jumbo-Visma, won the team time trial on stage 2 of the Tour de France. This helped his teammate, Mike Teunissen, keep the overall lead. Dylan then won stage 7 of the Tour de France, which was another long stage. This was his fourth Tour de France stage win. He also won three stages in the Tour of Britain.

A Difficult Year (2020)

Dylan started 2020 well, winning stages in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and the UAE Tour.

However, during stage 1 of the Tour de Pologne in August, Dylan was involved in a serious crash. He was disqualified from the race. In November 2020, he received a nine-month ban from racing because of the crash. Dylan and his team apologized for what happened. Dylan said he "deviated from [his] line" and wanted to be a "fair sprinter."

Joining Team BikeExchange–Jayco (2022–Present)

In December 2021, Dylan signed a three-year contract with the Australian team Team BikeExchange–Jayco. He started racing with them in 2022.

Early in 2022, he won stages in several smaller races. These included the Tour de Hongrie, the Tour of Slovenia, and the 2022 Saudi Tour. He also won the points classification in the Saudi Tour. At the 2022 Tour de France, he won stage 3. This was his first Tour de France win since 2019. In the 2024 Tour de France, Dylan won stage 6 in a very close photo finish after a group sprint.

Personal Life

As of 2017, Dylan Groenewegen lives in Rivierenbuurt, a neighborhood in Amsterdam.
