Dynnyrne is a suburb located in Hobart, Tasmania. It is about 3 kilometers (about 2 miles) southwest of the main city of Hobart. In 2016, a count showed that 1577 people lived in Dynnyrne.
This suburb sits on a hill, offering great views of the Derwent River. It is located above the Southern Outlet road and the suburb of Sandy Bay. Dynnyrne's borders stretch from Fitzroy Gardens in the north to the University of Tasmania apartments in the south. To the west, it reaches up the Waterworks Valley. Other nearby suburbs include South Hobart and Tolmans Hill. Dynnyrne is known as one of Tasmania's wealthiest suburbs.
History of Dynnyrne
Dynnyrne officially became a suburb in 1970. Before that, people were asked to suggest names for the area in 1940. Around 80 different ideas were sent in!
Six of these names were sent to the Post Office for review. However, names like Cooloola, Illawarra, and Pambula were rejected. This was because they were too similar to names already used in other parts of Australia.
After more discussions, the name Dynnyrne was chosen. It was picked to remember Dynnyrne House, which was one of the first homes built in the area about 100 years earlier. Dynnyrne House was built by Robert William Murray. Even though some people thought the name Dynnyrne would be hard to spell, it was still adopted.
Geography and Location
Dynnyrne has some natural boundaries. Sandy Bay Rivulet forms part of its northern edge. Rifle Range Creek also makes up part of its eastern boundary.
