EQT Plaza is a tall and unique skyscraper in Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It's a big office building that has had a few different names over the years. It was once known as the CNG Tower and later the Dominion Tower. Today, it's named after EQT Corporation, an energy company that has its main offices there.

The building was first built for Consolidated Natural Gas, which was a regional energy company. In 1999, Dominion Energy bought CNG. Dominion Energy moved out of the building in 2007. Later, in 2009, EQT Corporation moved its main offices into the building. They moved from a smaller building across the Allegheny River in the North Shore area of the city.

Building History

This skyscraper was first planned to be the main office for a company called Allegheny International. This company was famous for its retail brand, Sunbeam. At the time, Sunbeam was the biggest maker of small home appliances in the world.

Construction and Design

The 32-floor skyscraper was finished in 1987. It cost about $100 million to build. The building stands 430 feet (131 meters) tall above Downtown Pittsburgh. Its design was greatly inspired by the Art Deco style. You can see this style in other Pittsburgh skyscrapers. Examples include the Gulf Tower, Koppers Tower, and Grant Building.

Who Owned the Building?

From 2005 to 2010, the building was owned by the Blackstone Group. This company is known for managing many different types of properties. After they bought the building, they helped it become much more full. The number of occupied offices went from 66% to 97%.

In 2010, Blackstone sold the building to Pearson Realty Services. Then, in December 2012, a company called Highwoods Properties bought the building. Highwoods Properties is from Raleigh, North Carolina. They also own another famous skyscraper nearby, PPG Place.
