List of tallest buildings in Pittsburgh facts for kids

Pittsburgh is a big city in the state of Pennsylvania. It's famous for its many tall buildings! There are over 125 buildings that are at least 115 feet (35 m) tall. A good number of these, 32 to be exact, are even taller than 300 feet (91 m).
The very tallest building in Pittsburgh is the U.S. Steel Tower. It has 64 floors and stands 841 feet (256 m) high! It was finished in 1970. This tower is also the fifth tallest building in all of Pennsylvania. The second tallest skyscraper in Pittsburgh is the BNY Mellon Center, which reaches 725 feet (221 m) into the sky.
The story of Pittsburgh's skyscrapers began in 1895 with the Carnegie Building. This was the first steel-framed skyscraper in the city, with 13 floors. However, it wasn't the tallest building at the time. The Allegheny County Courthouse, finished in 1888, had a tower that was 249 feet (76 m) tall, making it higher. The Carnegie Building was later taken down in 1952.
Pittsburgh saw a big boom in building tall structures from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. During this time, 11 of the city's 20 tallest buildings were built. This includes the three tallest ones: the U.S. Steel Tower, BNY Mellon Center, and PPG Place. As of 2020, Pittsburgh had 10 completed skyscrapers that were at least 492 feet (150 m) tall. This makes Pittsburgh's skyline the 14th tallest in the United States and 90th in the world! Two of these skyscrapers are even taller than 700 feet (213 m).
Unlike some other big American cities, Pittsburgh didn't build as many new skyscrapers in the early 2000s. Only two buildings over 300 feet (91 m) have been finished since 2000. The 361 feet (110 m) Three PNC Plaza was completed in 2010. The 545 feet (166 m) Tower at PNC Plaza was finished in 2015, making it the newest skyscraper in the city. As of 2022, one tall building, the FNB Financial Center, is still being built.
