East Haven is a small and charming fishing village located in Angus, Scotland. It's about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of Carnoustie and 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Arbroath. The big city of Dundee is around 13 miles (21 km) to the west.

A Glimpse into East Haven's Past

East Haven has a very long and interesting history. The village was first mentioned way back in 1214! It was called 'Stinchendehavene' then.

Early Records and Names

In 1214, a nobleman named Philip de Valognes gave rights to the Cistercian monks from Coupar Angus. This allowed them to build on the land and use the harbour. They could even charge a fee for fishing there.

East Haven also appears on an old map made by Timothy Pont between 1583 and 1596. On this map, it was spelled 'East Heaven'. Over time, the village has been known by other names too, like 'Ross Haven' and 'Mauleshaven'.

Fishing Life in East Haven

Long ago, a small fleet of fishing boats worked from East Haven's natural harbour. They would catch fish like cod and haddock. These fish were then sold in markets in Dundee and Forfar.

Fishermen also caught lobsters to sell in London. Crabs were caught for people living nearby. Fishing was a very important part of life in East Haven for many years.

East Haven's Beach and Visitors

The beach at East Haven is a popular spot, especially in the summer. Families from the local area love to visit.

Royal Visitors to the Coast

Did you know that even the British royal family used to visit East Haven? In the 1930s, they would stay at Glamis Castle for holidays. During their visits, they often came to enjoy the beach at East Haven.

Homes by the Sea

Many houses in East Haven are built very close to the beach. The coastline here is rocky and can be windy, which is typical for Scotland. These homes are popular for people who live there all year round or as summer holiday houses.

The Railway's Impact on the Village

In 1838, a railway line was built right through East Haven. This was the Dundee and Arbroath Railway.

East Haven Railway Station

East Haven used to have its own small railway station. However, this station closed down in 1967.

Living by the Tracks

About twenty houses in the village are located on the side of the railway line closest to the sea. These homes used to have a private crossing over the tracks. But this crossing was closed in 2003. Now, only cars can reach these houses easily.

Other Notable Features

Near East Haven, there was once a naval air station called RNAS East Haven (HMS Peewit). This was a place where naval aircraft operated from.

Bus Services for the Village

For many years, East Haven had a bus service. It was the 73A route, which connected Arbroath to Dundee's Ninewells Hospital. This service was run by Stagecoach. However, the bus service was stopped in June 2020.
