East Lake is a beautiful lake in Central Oregon, United States. It is one of two lakes found inside the huge bowl of an ancient volcano. This area is called the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. You can find East Lake in the Deschutes National Forest, not far from La Pine.
The giant bowl, or caldera, formed over 500,000 years ago. This happened after massive volcanic eruptions. East Lake gets its water from melting snow, rainfall, and warm hot springs. The lake is about 67 feet (20 m) deep on average. At its deepest point, it reaches 180 feet (55 m). East Lake covers a large area of 1,044 acres (4.2 km2). It sits about 50 feet (15 m) higher than its twin lake, Paulina Lake, which is to its west.
Fun at East Lake
East Lake is a great place for outdoor adventures! There are two main camping areas right along the lake's edge. These spots are perfect for setting up a tent or parking an RV.
You can also visit the East Lake Resort. The resort offers cozy cabins if you want to stay indoors. They also have boats you can rent to explore the lake. Plus, there's a general store where you can grab snacks or supplies.
Fishing in East Lake
If you love to fish, East Lake is a fantastic spot. The lake is home to different kinds of fish. You can try to catch brown trout and rainbow trout.
The lake is also regularly "stocked" with fish. This means new fish are added to help keep the fish population healthy. You might catch sockeye salmon, also known as Kokanee. Atlantic salmon are also stocked in the lake.
