History of Eastlakes
Eastlakes gets its name from the many lakes in its southeast. It is also located in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. This area was once called Botany Swamps. From 1859, water was pumped from here to supply Sydney. It was the city's third water source.
The lakes were partly drained to create the Lakes Golf Course. Some land was also used for Sydney Airport extensions. Part of Eastlakes was once the Rosebery Racecourse. This was a place for horse racing. In the 1960s, it was turned into homes and shops. A park in the area now has a memorial. It remembers local soldiers and horses. They trained there during both World Wars.
In the early 1970s, people were worried about some land. They thought it would stay a park. But a company owned the land. A large meeting was held. People asked a workers' group to help. This group stopped building on the land. Because of this, the area is still parkland today.
