Discover Kingsford's Location

Kingsford is mostly a place where people live. It is located just south of the University of New South Wales. Many students live in apartments and other housing here. Kingsford is surrounded by other suburbs like Daceyville to the south and Randwick to the north.

In the middle of Kingsford, at Anzac Parade and Gardeners Road, there used to be a big roundabout. People sometimes called this area "nine-ways" because many bus routes met there. Now, it is a traffic light intersection due to the new light rail. Kingsford is also less than 5 kilometres from Coogee Beach.

A Look at Kingsford's History

Kingsford was first known as South Kensington. In 1936, its name changed to Kingsford. This was to honour Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. He was a famous Australian pilot. The nearby Sydney Airport was also named after him. Kingsford grew a lot in the 1920s.

In the 1940s, many people from Greece came to live in Kingsford. A lot of them were from the island of Castellorizo. They opened many businesses in the area. In 1973, they built the Castellorizian Club on Anzac Parade.

Kingsford was planned to be the end of the Eastern Suburbs railway line. But to save money, the train line stopped at Bondi Junction in 1979. A new light rail system now connects Kingsford to the Sydney CBD. It opened in April 2020.

Honouring Charles Kingsford Smith

In 2010, a special tribute was made for Charles Kingsford Smith. It is in Gardeners Lane, near Anzac Parade. This tribute includes a mosaic of Smith and his plane, the Southern Cross. There is also a mural showing the Southern Cross flying across the Pacific Ocean. Mayor John Procopiadis officially opened it on August 11, 2010. Masoud Nodous designed it, and Tim Cole was the artist. Another mural was added in 2014 by artist Annette Barlow.
