Eba is a small place, or locality, located in the Murray Mallee area of South Australia. It sits between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Murray River. You can find Eba along the Thiele Highway. It used to be on the Morgan railway line, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southwest of Morgan, close to a bend in the Murray River.
History of Eba
The area known as Eba today is the western part of the Hundred of Eba. This "Hundred" was a type of land division created in 1860. It was named after a friend of the governor at that time.
The Railway and Its Impact
When the railway line was built in 1878, the train station, or siding, was also named Eba, after the Hundred. This railway line, called the Morgan railway line, was very important for the area. However, it was closed down in 1969.
What Eba Was Like
Today, not much is left of the original village of Eba. But it was once a busy little community! It had several important businesses and services:
- A post office, where people could send and receive mail.
- A school for the local children.
- A blacksmith, who made and repaired metal tools.
- A grocery store, where families bought food and supplies.
- A sawmill, which cut wood. This sawmill sent a lot of firewood to Adelaide.
- Eba even had its own cricket team!
The current boundaries for the locality of Eba were officially set in 2003, keeping the long-established name.
