A Bit of History
How Mount Mary Got Its Name
Even though the town is called "Mount Mary," the land around it is actually quite flat. People believe the name might have originally been "Mound Mary."
The town was first planned out in 1883. In 1884, it was named Krichauff. This name came from the Hundred of Krichauff, which was a local area named after a person called Friedrich Krichauff.
During World War I, many Australian places with German names were changed. So, in 1918, the town's name was changed from Krichauff to Beatty. The name of the local area (the Hundred) was also changed to Beatty. Then, in 1940, the town's name was changed again to Mount Mary. This was done to match the name of the railway station. The name Beatty is still used for the area that covers the northern part of the hundred of Beatty.
The Old School
A school opened in Mount Mary in 1886. It was first called the Krichauff School. In 1896, its name was changed to Mount Mary School. The school closed for a short time from 1909 to 1913. Sadly, the Mount Mary School closed for good in 1956.
What's There Now?
Today, Mount Mary is a very small town. It still has a hotel that serves people living there and travelers passing through. However, there are not many other businesses left, besides farming. The town has about ten homes, the hotel, and a working public telephone box.

Mount Mary is part of different government areas:
- For federal government elections, it is in the Barker area.
- For state government elections in South Australia, it is in the Chaffey area.
- For local services, it is part of the Mid Murray Council.
