Bower is a small town located in South Australia. It's about halfway between the towns of Eudunda and Morgan, right on the Thiele Highway.

Discovering Bower's Past

The First People

Long ago, the land where Bower now stands was the home of the Ngadjuri people. They were the original inhabitants of this area.

How Bower Got Its Name

The town was named after a person called David Bower. He was a politician in South Australia from 1865 to 1887. He helped the state by giving land for important public buildings and places.

A Busy Timber Hub

Around 1916, Bower became a busy place for sending out 'mallee' timber and roots. Mallee is a type of tree that grows in dry areas. These timber products were loaded onto trains at the local railway station. They were then sent to Adelaide using the Morgan railway line.

Schools in Bower

Bower Public School was open in the town from 1917 to 1960. Before that, there was another school run by the Lutheran church. This earlier school had to close during World War I.

Historic Lime Kilns

You can find the historic Lime Kiln Ruins on Bower Boundary Road. These old structures are very important. They are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register because of their history.
