Ebern is a cool town in Germany, located in the northern part of Franconia. It's nestled between the towns of Haßfurt and Coburg. Around 8,000 people call Ebern home. The town's mayor is Robert Herrmann. Ebern has a long history, being about 1,000 years old! It even has an old, well-preserved defense wall. Did you know Ebern gets its name from the German word for 'boar' (Eber)?
The Legend of Ebern's Name
How Ebern Got Its Boar Symbol
There's a fun legend about how Ebern got its name and its symbol. The story goes that two hunters were chasing a wild boar. They both hit the boar with their spears. But then they couldn't agree on whose spear actually caused the boar to fall.
The boar finally collapsed right on the border between two areas: Seßlach and Ebern. Its head landed in Ebern, and its body was in Seßlach. Because of this, the hunters decided to divide the boar. That's why the town of Ebern is named after the boar. You can even see the boar's head on the town's flag!
