Ebraucus from a book called Genealogical Chronicle of the Kings of England to Edward IV (around 1461)

Ebraucus (in Welsh, Efrawg or Efrog) was a legendary king of the Britons. His story was told by a writer named Geoffrey of Monmouth. Ebraucus was the son of King Mempricius, who left his family.

The Story of King Ebraucus

After his father, Mempricius, was no longer king, Ebraucus took his place. He ruled for 39 years. Geoffrey of Monmouth described him as a respected leader. He was also very tall and incredibly strong.

Ebraucus's Adventures and Wealth

Ebraucus was the first British king since Brutus to fight against the Gauls. The Gauls were people who lived in what is now France. Ebraucus led his army to attack their cities and coastal areas. He gained a lot of wealth from these battles. This made his kingdom in Britain much richer.

Cities Founded by Ebraucus

King Ebraucus is said to have built two important settlements. One was called Kaerebrauc, which means "the City of Ebraucus." This city was north of the Humber river. It later became the famous city of York. Today, its Welsh name is Efrog.

The second settlement he founded was Alclud. This was in a place called Alba, which is now part of Scotland. Alclud is now known as Dunbarton. It used to be the capital of the Kingdom of Strathclyde. Some stories also say Ebraucus built the "town of Maidens," which is now Edinburgh Castle. Another old record mentions he built a castle in Montrose.

Ebraucus's Large Family

Ebraucus had a very large family. He had twenty wives, and together they had twenty sons and thirty daughters. He sent all his daughters to his cousin, Silvius Alba. Silvius Alba lived in Alba Longa, a city in Italy. The daughters were sent there to marry other people who were descendants of the Trojans.

Most of Ebraucus's sons, led by one named Assaracus, traveled to Germany. There, they created their own kingdom. Only one son, Brutus Greenshield, stayed behind. When Ebraucus died, Brutus Greenshield became the next king.
