Echo Bay is a small place in the state of Nevada, United States. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's an unincorporated community, which means it's part of a larger county.
This community is located on the western side of the Overton Arm. This is the northern part of Lake Mead, a very large lake. Echo Bay is inside the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, a special park managed by the National Park Service.
What Can You Do at Echo Bay?
Echo Bay is a popular spot for visitors. About 200,000 people come here every year!
- There's a campground where you can set up tents or park RVs. It's run by the National Park Service.
- You can also find a boat ramp here. This is a place where you can launch your boat into Lake Mead.
There used to be a marina at Echo Bay. A marina is like a parking lot for boats, with docks and services. However, this marina closed down in February 2013.
The Story Behind the Name: eBay!
Did you know that Echo Bay has a cool connection to a famous website? Pierre Omidyar, who started the online auction site eBay, used to visit the marina at Echo Bay often. He loved the area!
When he was thinking of a name for his new company, he remembered Echo Bay. He thought the name "Echo Bay" sounded really cool. So, he wanted to call his company EchoBay.com.
However, the website address "echobay.com" was already taken. It belonged to a Canadian mining company called Echo Bay Mines. Since he couldn't use his first choice, Pierre Omidyar went with his second idea: eBay.com! And that's how the huge online marketplace got its name.
