Echt-Susteren is a special kind of local government area called a municipality in the southeastern Netherlands. It was formed in 2003 when two older municipalities, Echt and Susteren, joined together.
This area is part of a larger region that connects different countries. To the west, Echt-Susteren borders Belgium, and to the east, it borders Germany. At its narrowest point, the municipality is only about 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) wide. This means you could walk from Germany to Belgium, passing through the Netherlands, in less than an hour! Echt-Susteren is also known as the "green waist of Limburg" because it has many natural, green spaces.

Exploring Echt-Susteren's Villages
Echt-Susteren is made up of many smaller villages and towns. These include Aasterberg, Baakhoven, Berkelaar, Dieteren, Echt, Echterbosch, Gebroek, Heide, Hingen, Illikhoven, Kokkelert, Koningsbosch, Maria-Hoop, Nieuwstadt, Oevereind, Ophoven, Oud-Roosteren, Pey, Pepinusbrug, Roosteren, Schilberg, Sint Joost, Slek, Susteren, and Visserweert.
Echt
Echt used to be its own municipality. It was given special "city rights" in 1343. This meant it had certain freedoms and rules, like being able to hold markets.
Susteren
Susteren was also a separate municipality before joining with Echt. It received its city rights even earlier, in 1276.
Maria-Hoop
Maria-Hoop is a small village. It is close to the smaller areas of Echterbosch and Putbroek, and the village of Koningsbosch. The village was first called Diergaarde. In 1953, its name was changed to Maria-Hoop. This new name came from the local church, which was called Moeder der H. Hoop.
Roosteren
The village of Roosteren has about 1,600 people, including those in Kokkelert and Oevereind. Its name comes from a mix of "Rode Beek" (Red Brook) and "Suestra" (Susteren). Roosteren has two old castles, Castle Ter Boch and Castle Eyckholt. It also has several old manor houses.
The village is located between the Meuse River and the Juliana Canal. A small part of the village, called Oud Roosteren (Old Roosteren), is separated by the canal. The main church is in Roosteren, but the cemetery is near where the old church used to be in Oud Roosteren.
